The focus of FIW 2021 is on how COVID-19 has exposed the fragility of the global economy, with low-income households and small businesses bearing the brunt of the pandemic’s economic impact. The crisis ushered in a new era of digitalization, from the distribution of social payments to businesses adapting to sell products online or accept digital payments. This is in addition to systemic challenges of gender inequality in financial services, climate change, and data risks.
In a live one hour plenary session at FIW 2021 titled How Businesses Can Adapt to Continue Serving Customers in Times of Uncertainty, the Fund will introduce the work it has been doing to support its portfolio of businesses during the uncertain times with COVID-19 pandemic and other shocks, and hear from Fund experts and participants in a panel discussion.
The Fund has acted quickly to support participants weather the crisis and support the recovery and resilience of the portfolio through a COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Challenge as part of a wider Mastercard Foundation COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience program. 12 selected participants have already begun to show results. The program has also generated significant learning around how businesses are able to adapt to continue serving customers and provided information around how financial inclusion has affected the resilience of customers to respond to the crisis. These insights and learnings have been captured through a series of interviews with participants to hear their journeys, as well as a survey of over 2,000 customers of Fund-supported products in 6 African countries. This session will bring to light these findings and insights.
